We said farewell to Chynna who stayed with us for 2 nights, and headed on a day trip out to Nara. To get there, just catch the JR Nara Line from Kyoto Station 🙂
It was a gloomy day of pouring rain and very cold too. We spent the day in Nara Park as the bad weather didn’t really entice us to go explore other parts of Nara.
The deers got pretty aggressive when they knew you had deer crackers. None of them really tried to snag some off me but they most definitely followed me for metres.
We then headed to Todaiji where Daibutsuden (Big Buddha Hall) which houses the Big Buddha is the biggest wooden building in the world. Interestingly, its reconstruction reduced it to a mere 2/3 of the original size.
I thought this was clever.. you can sponsor a tile for their roof reconstruction and in return your name will be painted onto the tile.
Deers are such sweet, docile creatures here in Nara Park and in Miyajima as well. I really wanted to take one home.
Mikuji – where your fortune will be given to you written in a scroll. If it’s not that great, the tradition is to tie it onto strings (like a clothesline) at the shrine to leave behind.
That huge piece of trunk is used to make mochi (sticky rice). I remember as a child I looked forward to the yearly festival where we made mochi in the streets.
As the weather wasn’t too great for us on our day trip in Nara – we headed back after eating some Chuka-style food (Chinese influenced).
