Anzac Day

Army Daphne

This is a photo of my Nanna in her Land Army uniform. She passed away aged 77 in 2003.

For those who don’t know, today is Anzac Day, a day of remembrance for all those who sacrificed their lives to celebrate the freedom we enjoy today. And although this day of the year tends to be reflected with hindsight, I think its also a good day to think about those around us, family, friends and those completely disconnected to us who serve and fight to retain what we all have today.

It has been a long while since I posted up a video. I actually had no thought to what I was going to put up except for it being the only good quality capture of my weekend gigs at Easterfest – but I ended up uploading a live video yesterday for one of my songs called Purple Heart. I actually wrote the song a few years ago in relation to sending close ones off to serve as a soldier. It was purely coincidental and although it won’t be on my new EP, I’ll share the lyrics and video here. It doesn’t capture anything to the emotions felt by those who suffered but I guess its just my small slice of story to share alongside my gorgeous photo of my Nanna.

Lest We Forget.

Purple Heart
You are so faraway from me, are you there?
Alone in this house that once used to be: we
You’ve packed up and left to a brand new place
And left me no number to call your name
Oh darling don’t you know that once you’ve embarked
The distance would tear us crazy apart

Because you’ve signed up to be a soldier away from me
Oh you’ve chosen to serve and leave your girl with misery
Just promise you’ll fight til you fall
And come back to give me your all
Oh baby, just fly back home

We used to be inseparable and now look, where are you?
Oh lord, have some mercy for me ’cause I am struggling to be
Okay with the fact that you took him up
And left me to pack up his bones and blood
Oh darling don’t you know that once you’ve embarked
The distance would tear us crazy apart

Because you’ve signed up to be a soldier away from me
Oh you’ve chosen to serve and leave your girl with misery
Just promise you’ll fight til you fall
And come back to give me your all
Oh baby

Just fly back home
Just fly back home
You never came home
