Stormy Shinjuku

photo 1

The weather was still absolutely horrible.. but we had to push on as it was our last day in Tokyo before we embarked to other destinations. We were yet to check out Shinjuku, home of the busiest train station in the world. We started with Lumine Est department store. The weather was so bad I never took my camera out of my bag so.. phone photos it is. Apologies.

Japan is making James and I much more trendy. Maybe we’re suited as winter people though.. but James wore his new chinos from Uniqlo and bought this jacket from Paper Chest. The retail assistant and James were chatting away like old mates. Anyway, I thought James looked great compared to the usual knobbly knees jutting out of football shorts with bus driver socks on that I was used to seeing.

We then did a department store crawl so that I can find something for my grandfather.. but to no success. I don’t know how so many exist.. we went to OIOI, Isetan, Takashimaya, Mitsukoshi, Lumine etc. We were exhausted but found this cute little French bakery to re-fuel.

We also went to Bic Camera.. and then the crazy union of Bicqlo – Bic Camera & Uniqlo combined, ABC Mart, Watch etc. Surprisingly throughout my whole time in Tokyo I never stepped into the big box fashion stores like H&M, Forever 21, Topshop and Zara.. I guess I wasn’t interested this time around, I’m slowly moving on from it.. gosh does this mean I’m growing up haha. I realised this time around that I hated all the crap in ALTA (Shinjuku) and Shibuya 109 too when 4 years ago I was enjoying it thoroughly.

Then we went down to B1 so James can enjoy the department food expo below. It’s like a whole other world down there. I SERIOUSLY DO NOT UNDERSTAND HOW SO MANY DEPARTMENTS HAVE SO MANY LITTLE SHOPS AND THEY ALL CAN SURVIVE AND MAKE MONEY. Drives my mind wild.

The weather was absolutely horrible today.. there was the sharpest and coldest wind, spitting rain and cold air. My umbrella broke and it wasn’t because the joints got funny but because the wind actually BENT the metal.

We then quickly checked out Tokyu Hands which is a crazy ensemble of craft, stationery, hobbies.. actually I don’t really know how to explain what it is because it stocks a lot of random stuff. You can definitely spend a whole hunk of time there easily. James bought a traditional Japanese saw. Wut. I know. But he wants it as part of his workshop tools collection.

I then enjoyed these chocolate lollipops which I used to beg my mum to buy at the supermarkets. Absolute nostalgia and yummy too.

My dad then picked us up from Ebisu so that he could pick up one of the luggage (full of shopping) and guitars from me so we didn’t have to lug it around once we leave Tokyo tomorrow. We then went back to Musashi Kosugi for dinner.

Korean dinner. It was delicious. Chijimi pancakes of negi and chives, pork belly and kimchi.

James and I caught the train back to Ebisu to once again go back to Japanese Icecream OUCA. I wanted to enjoy the awesome flavours they had once more. Sadly, they didn’t have my houjicha flavour so I had milk, matcha and kinako. This time I actually tried the dried salty seaweed throughout my extra large ice cream AND HOLY CRAP it was amazing. Last time I had it BEFORE the ice cream and found it insanely salty and gross. This time, the salt was neutralised by the sugar I was stuffing into me and it acted as a palate cleanser for my next ice cream bite. The balance of flavours were spot on.

James enjoyed a matcha milkshake.

We then went to the supermarkets to be shocked by the cheap prices of alcohol. That is so insanely cheap compared to Australia. Holy mackerel. The taxes on our alcohol back at home must be hefty.

We got some baby Kirin and Asahi to enjoy and taste test against each other. I’m surprised they even have little baby ones like these! They’re so puny compared to the normal one.

Some new year mochi cakes… so cute!

Finger comparison of the cute small size. I’m going to keep the cans and grow plants out of them hehe.

Now we are just packing to get ready to move out of my Tokyo home. It’s been two weeks I’ve lived here so it’s a little sad but I’m excited to see the mountains and enjoy a slower paced lifestyle.

Today I received an email from a German fan (and now friend) who sent a hilarious photo to me. How do I explain this without sounding strange… I guess it is more so an inside joke now but we always talk about pooping pastimes and grade our efforts. So, he made this immaculate fan art for me. Don’t worry, he used a pen marker. Anyway, I found it hilarious and laughed my head off while I was walking the streets of Shinjuku. Such a pretty toilet too!
